A unique way to experience Great Yarmouth
The South East Tower
Great Yarmouth boasts the second best preserved medieval town wall in England. The wall, a Scheduled Ancient Monument, traces its origins to 1261, when King Henry III granted permission to enclose the town with a moat and ditch. It took years to complete, the main work finishing in 1346, but construction continuing until c.1400. The fortification, which was last manned during the English Civil War, was more than 23 feet high and 2,280 yards long, with 10 gates and 16 towers.
Construction on the South East Tower began in the 14th century, with the upper parts added in the 16th century. In 2014, Great Yarmouth Preservation Trust began a project on behalf of the Borough Council, repairing the tower and undertaking a light conversion into use as a holiday property. Original features such as arrow slots, wooden beams and a medieval well were conserved and retained.
Thanks to the repairs undertaken, the tower was removed from the Buildings at Risk Register.
Staying in the Tower
The Tower sleeps up to 6 people. There are two bedrooms – one twin and one double – with the capacity for extra people on futons. There is a fully equipped kitchen and dining area, and a separate living room. A bathroom is situated in the basement – featuring its very own medieval well. A balcony offers views across town to the sea.
Children are very welcome, though the building is not suitable for children under the age of 2. The Tower has wifi, tv, radio, dishwasher, ironing facilities and private parking. Dogs are permitted at an additional cost of £25, please let us know in advance.
The Tower is perfectly situated for visitors interested in history, being very close to the highly-acclaimed Time and Tide Museum and historic South Quay. It is also only a two minute walk from Great Yarmouth’s iconic Golden Mile.
The cost of the Tower is £200 per night (plus £35 cleaning fee) for the first 4 guests. If more than 4 people wish to stay, additional linen and towels are provided at £50 per head per night. A 20% discount is applied for stays of one week or more.
